Turn Around!

Again and again, God’s Word reveals that He is not as concerned about the depth or extent of the sin we commit as He is about our attitude and response when we are confronted with our sin. - Nancy Leigh Demoss
The basketball rolled out of the scrum of seven-year-old boys and into the hands of my grandson. He grabbed the ball and dribbled unguarded toward the basket. Only one problem – it was the other team’s basket.
His coach yelled, his teammates yelled, I yelled, everyone yelled! Whether he heard our cries or realized his own error, he turned around, dribbled past defenders the full length of the court, shot, and watched the ball drop into his team’s basket.
We have all had a moment when we realize we are headed in the wrong direction, or more accurately, realize we were not going in the right direction. The word repent essentially means to turn around. We tend to focus on turning away from sin, but the key is turning toward Jesus.
Once we recognize the shame we’ll experience and the hurt we’ll cause others, we repent; we change our course and move in the right direction. This shift in motion not only steers us away from wrongdoing but also brings us closer to God.
Turning away and turning toward must be one fluid motion. Paul challenges Timothy, “But you, young man, flee from all this (greed), and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance and gentleness.”(1 Timothy 6:11)
