weekly devotions to refresh your soul by Dr. Dan Bolin - August 2, 2022

God will put up with a great many things in the human heart, but there is one thing that He will not put up with in it--a second place. He who offers God a second place, offers Him no place. - John Ruskin

The prophet Ahijah told Jeroboam that he would become king over Israel. A few years later, God’s word was fulfilled, and Jeroboam took the throne.

Jeroboam soon led his nation into idolatry. He constructed two golden calves, built alternative shrines, commissioned counterfeit priests, and established new worship festivals. He turned his back on God and led his nation in the wrong direction.

Then his son became very sick. Did he pray to the golden calves, go to the alternative shrines, or confer with the counterfeit priests? No, he sent his wife to the prophet Ahijah. “Go to Shiloh. Ahijah the prophet is there---the one who told me I would be king over this people. . . He will tell you what will happen to the boy.” (I Kings 14:2b). Sadly, the little boy died.

Jeroboam lived in open rebellion from God until a crisis appeared. Then he circumvented his new priests, shrines, and idols to seek help from God. Deep down, Jeroboam knew there was only one true God.

Don’t wait for a crisis to scamper back to God. Walk with Him today and avoid wandering – or running – away from our only source of hope, the one true God.
