Mirage
Nº 163 weekly devotions to refresh your soul by Dr. Dan Bolin - September 14, 2021
Because faith makes invisible things real, and visible things unreal, earthly dissatisfaction becomes the road to heavenly satisfaction. - Joni Eareckson Tada
In the desert sun, eyes and minds play tricks on thirsty travelers. They see pools of water but as they draw closer, the hope of refreshment disappears into more dry, parched desert. So too, the mirages of happiness, fulfilment, and pleasure this world offers. Jesus met a thirsty woman who was chasing a mirage. Their paths intersected on a hot day near an ancient well. Her desire for a drink of cool water was a metaphor for her lifetime search for anything that might quench her parched soul. Every hope had been a mirage. Jesus offered her more. John records, Jesus answered, "Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life. The woman said to him, “Sir, give me this water so that I won’t get thirsty and have to keep coming here to draw water” (John 4:13-15). Don’t chase this world’s mirages that appear at every turn; they will never satisfy. Drink deeply of the water Jesus offers. He alone provides the refreshment and fulfilment we all desire.
