Keep it Level

Dan Bolin

leveling building
“The Word of God I think of as a straight edge, which shows up our own crookedness. We can’t really tell how crooked our thinking is until we line it up with the straight edge of Scripture.”  Elisabeth Elliot

I watched several workmen trying their best to level the metal beams designed to hold the building’s new awning. They pounded with sledge hammers and then used a level to see if the beams were flush. More whacks with the hammer, more level checks, and finally, the metal bars were exactly where they needed to be.

Level supports are essential if the rest of the structure is to be properly aligned. Without an even base, nothing else will be exactly right. If the foundational support is misaligned, nothing that follows will be safe to build upon.

Scripture is the ‘level’ God has provided to accurately align every area of our lives.

One of the final tools Paul passed on to Timothy was the ‘level’ of scripture. He said, “ All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness.” (2 Timothy 3:16)

Don’t step back to “eye ball” life’s challenges, hoping that your actions, attitudes and beliefs will be “straight enough.” Read, study, memorize, and apply God’s Word. Paul’s next verse explains why the level of scripture is so critical: “ so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.” (2 Timothy 3:17)
