Go for the Gold

Nº 157 weekly devotions to refresh your soul by Dr. Dan Bolin - AUGUST 3, 2021

“If a man does not exercise his arm he develops no biceps muscle; and if a man does not exercise his soul, he acquires no muscle in his soul, no strength of character, no vigor of moral fiber, nor beauty of Spiritual growth.” - Henry Drummond

The Olympics is underway! Athletes from around the world are competing for gold medals – any medal. From swimming to shooting, from boxing to basketball, each expert strives to be their best. The competitors share one thing in common – training. No one woke up ten days ago and decided to compete in the Olympics. Many have invested their entire lives in preparation. They rise early to practice, eat the right foods, listen to their coaches, and make significant sacrifices along the way. Paul explained the value of spiritual training to his young protégé, Timothy, “Train yourself to be godly. For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come. (I Timothy 4:7b-8) How does that happen? How do we gain strength and skill in our spiritual life? Paul goes on a few verses later to explain. “Watch your life and doctrine closely. Persevere in them.” (I Timothy 4:16a) Practice makes permanent, so practice the right things. Practice making godly choices every day and make the sacrifices necessary to faithfully study God’s word.
