Fill 'er Up!

Dan Bolin

Nº 151 weekly devotions to refresh your soul by Dr. Dan Bolin - June 22, 2021

“If we think of the Holy Spirit only as an impersonal power or influence, then our thought will constantly be, how can I get hold of and use the Holy Spirit; but if we think of Him in the biblical way as a divine Person, infinitely wise, infinitely holy, infinitely tender, then our thought will constantly be, ‘How can the Holy Spirit get hold of and use me?’” R.A. Torrey

The sign inside the gasoline cap stated, DO NOT OVERFILL! I’m sure that’s good advice; no one wants a ruptured gas tank. However, what is true for gas tanks is impossible in our spiritual lives. Paul instructed the Christians at Ephesus to “be filled with the Spirit.” (Ephesians 5:19) That’s one command that we can never overdo. Unlike filling a gas tank, filling our lives with the Holy Spirit is not about getting a little more of God into our lives, it is about giving more and more control of our lives to God. As Christians, we have all of God we will ever need, but God may not have as much of us as He wants. Being filled with the Spirit means that we allow God to control more and more of our lives and influence more and more of our decisions. The more we are filled with the Holy Spirit, the more we will use our time and money wisely. But we will also choose graceful responses to our disappointments, God honoring reactions to our pain, and controlled replies in our confrontations. Go ahead, overfill! Allow God’s Spirit to fill you to the brim and overflow to those around you.
