Faithful Father's Day

Dan Bolin

“Train up a child in the way he should go – but be sure you go that way yourself.” - Charles Spurgeon

Sadly, there are very few Bible stories with great leaders who are also godly fathers. Many times, the children of Bible heroes are unmentioned, and sometimes the next generation is a mess.

God the Father could have chosen anyone to fill the position, but He selected Joseph to be Jesus’ earthly dad. From the few glimpses we have into his life, Joseph was a simple, industrious, faithful man. His words are not recorded, but the Bible shows us four critical events that offer windows into his life and character. Each time he receives a supernatural instruction, and each time Joseph obeys God unswervingly.

· Matthew 1:20-24 An angel tells Joseph to marry Mary, and he does.

· Matthew 2:13 An angel tells Joseph to flee with his family to Egypt, and he does

· Matthew 2:19 An angel tells Joseph to return to Israel, and he does

· Matthew 2:22-23 In a dream he is directed to move to Galilee, and he does.

Father’s Day is next Sunday (at least in this part of the world). Whether you are a dad or not, strive to mirror the life of Joseph. Obey God, serve faithfully, and help protect and direct the next generation.
