EGG-ACTLY WHAT WE NEED

As a child, I loved visiting my great aunt and uncle’s egg farm. My aunt fed the hens, gathered the eggs, and sorted them. My uncle delivered fresh eggs to their customers every day. The sorting contraption amazed me. The eggs rolled down a long, narrow ramp and over a series of sensitive, metal diversion plates. If an egg weighed enough, the left side of the plate dipped about a quarter inch, and the egg rolled onto a sloped exit ramp. Eventually the big eggs congregated in the extra-large basket. The lighter eggs continued rolling until they sprung the large, medium, or small diversion plates and gently nestled into their new homes. Jesus talked a lot about sorting things: wheat from weeds (Matthew 13:30), sheep from goats (Matthew 25:33), and good fish from ‘throwbacks' (Matthew 13:48). Those are merely pictures of a sorting that is still to come. We could never be worth enough, good enough, or give enough to earn a proper sorting. God’s ultimate judgment is not based upon our worth, good works, or contributions. His sole criterion is our relationship with his Son, Jesus. And that is great news, because a relationship with Jesus is free to all. Matthew 13:30, 48, 25:33
