During the week leading to His crucifixion, Jesus clashed with several hypocritical religious and power-hungry political leaders. One group, the Sadducees, did not believe in angels or the resurrection, and they only accepted the five books of Moses.
They confronted Jesus with a question about a woman who had sequentially married seven brothers. Trying to trap Him they asked, “At the resurrection, whose wife will she be?” (Mark 12:23)
Jesus responded, “Are you not in error because you do not know the scripture or the power of God? “(12:24). He then jabs the Sadducees by affirming both the resurrection and angels, “when the dead rise. . . they will be like the angels of heaven.” (12:25)
He then used a story from Exodus, one of their favored books, to display their lack of biblical understanding. He explains that God spoke of the long-dead Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob using the present tense. He then declared “He is not the God of the dead but the living.” (12:26) Jesus ended the exchange with, “you are badly mistaken.” (12:27)
This Easter don’t be badly mistaken. Spend time in scripture reviewing the Easter story and reflect on the power of God displayed in Jesus’ resurrection.
