42 and We're Not Through!

Dan Bolin

“Kind words do not cost much. Yet they accomplish much.”  Blaise Pascal

Forty-two years ago, on December 18, 1976, Cay and I said, “I do.” Those are wonderful and powerful words! Solomon said, “He who finds a wife finds what is good and receives favor from the LORD.” (Proverbs 18:22) With 700 wives and 300 concubines, Solomon must have been very busy trying to find that one wife who would bring the Lord’s favor. Like many of us, Solomon seemed to know more about marriage than he was able to apply in his life! In his list of wise sayings, Solomon’s insight into marriage follows another thoughtful proverb: “The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit.” (Proverbs 18:21) Much of marriage rises and falls on what we say and how we say it. A harsh word, the silent treatment, a sharp retort, or a dismissive response has the power of death in a relationship. An encouraging, supportive, caring or comforting word has the power to breathe life into any marriage. Protect your marriage from unnecessary trauma by avoiding words that embarrass, tear down, or inflict pain. Breathe life into your marriage – or any relationship – by speaking words that build up and provide strength and solace.
